CHINATOWN WORKING GROUP
MISSION
​
The Chinatown Working Group is a broad coalition of community organizations with the common goal of protecting and preserving the culture and diversity of Chinatown and the Lower East Side from displacement and over-development, and of supporting the people who live and work among us. Our focus is on issues of shared concern throughout Chinatown and the Lower East Side including but not limited to affordability to people of low income, preservation and the social and economic well-being of families, seniors and youths. CWG’s objective is to implement the CWG Plan, a precise, comprehensive, meaningful, timely and broadly supported community-based plan for its future, and until it is implemented, to protect and preserve the diversity, vibrancy and culture of Chinatown and the Lower East Side. We outreach to, work with, and seek to unite community-based groups both local and across New York City facing similar issues of cultural and community preservation and protection threatened by over-development and community displacement.
The Chinatown Working Group was formed in 2008 to create a community-led rezoning plan which was finished and published in 2014. Since our planning process is complete, we continue to advocate for its implementation with monthly meetings the first Monday of every month, at 6:30pm.

To reach our goal of implementing the CWG, we are collecting signatures in support of the passage of the Plan, which will prevent out-of-scale towers in Chinatown and LES such as the mega-towers approved for Two Bridges.
